Saginaw Community Alliance for the People, Michigan Health Improvement Alliance work to break down barriers to systemic racism

Saginaw’s Community Alliance for the People and the Michigan Health Improvement Alliance have partnered on a leadership position focused on breaking down barriers to systemic racism in the city of Saginaw and communities throughout central and eastern Michigan.

The director of advocacy for justice, equity, diversity and inclusion will work toward this goal by identifying and implementing strategies to ensure everyone — regardless of who they are or where they came from — has equal access to:

  • receive affordable, convenient and safe health care;
  • live in vibrant neighborhoods and communities; and
  • be a part of a healthy workforce and economy.

“Our organizations have a shared interest in building community power around public health and giving the underserved and underheard a voice,” CAP Founding Member and President Jeff Bulls said. “We’ve been able to raise the bar on community discourse — the more we unite people to talk about tough issues, the more problems we can solve. The person in this position will be an ambassador to continue to make that happen.”

Bulls said the director — the first paid position in his organization — will play a critical role in expanding their advocacy and education work. The director will foster the integration of advocacy strategies as they relate to justice, equity, diversity and inclusion practices and policies across projects and initiatives with both organizations’ external partners.

The director position was originally created by Heidi Tracy, chief executive officer of the Michigan Health Improvement Alliance, and held by Jameca Patrick-Singleton until last month when she became the executive director of Cradle and vice-president of community health at YWCA Kalamazoo. Tracy then presented the opportunity to Bulls to partner on the position.

“This joint position is a commitment by both of our organizations to focus on addressing obstacles to equitable health and well-being in our communities,” Tracy said.

The role requires proficiency in, and an understanding of justice, equity, diversity and inclusion policies and best practices, with a particular focus on advocacy with grassroots organizations to provide value to the partner organizations and their projects.
