Director of Advocacy for Justice, Equity, Diversity & Inclusion

Reports To: Dual appointment to the President of CAP and the CEO of MiHIA
FLSA Status: Full-time, exempt, contract position (one-year appointment, may be extended based on grant funding)

Background

The Community Alliance for the People (CAP) and the Michigan Health Improvement Alliance (MiHIA) are working in partnership to connect and empower those who, together, are addressing obstacles to equitable health and well-being in Saginaw and communities throughout central and eastern Michigan. The position is committed to ensuring MiHIA is a high-functioning, supportive, diverse, anti-racist, equitable, and inclusive organization. This role requires proficiency in, and an understanding of justice, equity, diversity and inclusion policies and best practices, with particular focus on advocacy with grassroots organizations to provide distinctive value to our partner organizations and the projects they pursue. The Director of Advocacy for Justice, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (AJEDI) leads and oversees the overall justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion work in a manner consistent with CAP’s and MiHIA’s core values and strategic plans. The position is responsible for developing and fostering the integration of advocacy strategies as it relates to JEDI practices and policies across all projects and initiatives with its external partners. The Director of AJEDI will be responsible for the development and implementation of a results-focused comprehensive strategy to foster equitable, diverse, and inclusive strategies that identify and breakdown structural barriers to system structural racism.

Leadership Expectations

  • The Director of AJEDI jointly reports directly to the President of CAP and the Chief Executive Officer of MiHIA and collaborates to determine the strategic approaches needed within the organization to further its mission in a way that supports commitment to justice, equity, diversity and inclusion values.
  • Champions and organizes discussions, policy changes, and culture shifts that promote health equity goals by addressing structural barriers.
  • Works with CAP’s and MiHIA’s partners to guide and help execute projects goals and objectives, including reviewing, finalizing, and rolling out projects that clearly articulate how each effectively addresses health equity.
  • Secures appropriate funding and/or grant opportunities to further the goals and initiatives identified as priority projects by both organizations.
  • Ensures the design and delivery of projects lead to policies that advocate for system changes and break down structural barriers that prevent residents from living their healthiest lives.
  • Develops metrics to aid and support strategic vision and planning of JEDI goals.
  • Facilitates and shares research and best practices on emergent issues of JEDI and provides strategic guidance to enhance advocacy goals and cultural competency.
  • Become intimately familiar with Michigan state laws and its agencies’ policies and procedures to help identify policies and procedures that may propagate structural bias.
  • Collaborates with staff and partner organizations to facilitate trust-building, relationship-building, cultural competency, and organizational awareness as it relates to advocacy for JEDI.
  • Works externally to establish a network of experts and organizations involved in the state and national discussion of JEDI to consistently advise leaders on innovative ideas, policy development and program concepts.
  • This position may require additional time above normal operating hours and on occasion weekend work.

Preferred Qualifications & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Three to five (3- 5) years of experience working directly to promote and support equity, diversity, and inclusion. (Preferred: Five (5) years of relevant experience in a leadership role, with at least three (3) years in a strategic or operational AJEDI role.)
  • Demonstrated success in community-related nonprofit setting or related field, track record in fundraising and for collaboration and team building, excellent oral and written communication, and project management skills.
  • Experience in JEDI strategy development across various organizational levels.
  • Proven demonstrated ability in developing and supporting continuous improvement principles utilizing a systemic approach and data for decision-making.
  • Experience leading transformational or organizational change.

Required Competencies, Skills, and Abilities

  • Excellent relationship manager, open to direction, suggestions, and commitment to get the job done.
  • Delegates responsibility effectively.
  • High comfort working in a diverse environment.
  • Must be able to operate a motor vehicle and have valid insurance and driver’s license and access to own transportation. Travel is primarily during the business day, although some out-of-area and overnight travel may be expected.
  • Strong communicator and leader with interpersonal skills/experience working with diverse audiences, and keen awareness of global and cultural issues.
  • Ability to manage multiple, simultaneous projects and manage competing priorities.
  • Thoroughly adept at using Microsoft Office applications, including Teams, PowerPoint and Outlook.

Assigned Duties for 2024

  • Plan and organize CAP Talks in collaboration with CAP’s Executive Committee.
  • Incorporate information learned from CAP Talks into strategic plans and projects supported by MiHIA and its partners as a key staff member of the Strategic Impact Committee (a subcommittee of MiHIA’s Board of Directors).
  • Serve as the convener and strategist for MiHIA’s Financial Stability Task Force and Opioid Response Team.
  • Participate as a key strategist in MiHIA’s Bay City Childcare Initiative, the development of Andy’s Place Great Lakes Bay, and other projects and initiatives that arise throughout the year.
  • Attend MiHIA’s quarterly Board of Directors meetings and staff meetings in preparation of board meetings, including preparing reports and presentations.
  • Represent CAP and MiHIA at meetings throughout the state including BWell Saginaw and the Health Equity Council.
  • Seek out funding opportunities for initiatives, design programs for grant applications in conjunction with partners and assist in the submission of funding applications.
