OUR STORY

addressing need in our community

Many individuals and families in central and eastern Michigan face serious health inequities. Often unjustly influenced by factors such as race, ethnicity, socio-economic status, location, and education level, such disparities are harmful to our families, friends, and neighbors … and to our communities.

That is why for 15 years, the Michigan Health Improvement Alliance has brought innovative partners together to address critical, long-term needs across several counties in Michigan, including the state’s three northern Thumb counties, many in the Great Lakes Bay Region and three counties north of that.

The partners we support — comprising leaders in public health, industry, higher education, health care, local government, nonprofit organizations, and foundations — share common goals and the creative determination to do more and do it better.

how it began: our history

The Michigan Health Improvement Alliance upholds the belief that there is a powerful and inseparable link between economic success and health. We embrace this in everything that we do.

  1. 2007
The Michigan Health Improvement Alliance was created with the help of a planning contract awarded to Central Michigan University Research Corp. by the State of Michigan Department of Community Health.
  2. 2008
Michigan Health Improvement Alliance was designated as a Chartered Value Exchange by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
  3. 2010
Michigan Health Improvement Alliance was selected to participate in the Triple Aim, an initiative of the Institute for Health Improvement. Triple Aim, which targeted health care delivery at the regional level, was our initial outcome focus and centered on three dimensions: Population Health, Patient Experience, and Cost of Care.
  4. 2011
The Michigan Health Improvement Alliance became a legal entity when its Articles of Incorporation were approved by the State of Michigan on March 15, 2011.
  5. 2013
The Michigan Health Improvement Alliance receives a 501(c)(3) designation.
  6. 2017
Efforts began to gather stakeholder perspectives in the initial planning stages for THRIVE. A health ecosystem map was developed to illustrate leverage points for simultaneous health and economic improvements.
  7. 2018
The THRIVE Portfolio was established as a cohesive, community-aligned and connected plan.
  8. 2020
The Michigan Health Improvement Alliance was designated as a Chartered Value Exchange by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
  9. 2021
In support of the importance of data in our work, we launched additional data monitoring and metrics with the THRIVE Scorecard.
